Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Historical Park

The property that is now the Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Historical Park has been many things over the years. It became a national park in 1992 to continue the vital conservation work undergone on this property in the years prior. Today, in a world that’s often too eager to tear down and start fresh, this stunning National Park stands as a powerful example of how exceptional land stewardship can be.

The Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Historical Park is named for the families who owned and stewarded this land before it became a National Park. George Perkins Marsh, one of the nation’s first environmental thinkers and an early conservationist grew up on this property. Frederick Billings, also a conservationist, later owned it. He established a progressive dairy farm here and professionally managed the land’s forests. Later, his granddaughter, Mary French Rockefeller, and her husband, Laurance S. Rockefeller, continued these practices. In 1983, while maintaining the farms working dairy, they established the Billings Farm & Museum to interpret Vermont rural life and this property’s agricultural history.

This generations-long dedication to honoring and preserving this land makes the Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Historical Park such a special place to visit. Apart from this admirable dedication to land stewardship, though, the Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Historical Park is home to some of the most beautiful landscapes in Vermont. With features like centuries-old trees, covered bridges, meandering stone walls, and rolling pastoral views, it’s little wonder why all who visit the Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Historical Park so love and admire it.
