Among the Vermont Cheese Trail’s highlights, particularly in proximity to Woodstock, are several notable stops that epitomize the state’s cheesemaking prowess. The most notable near us is Plymouth Artisan Cheese, one of the oldest cheese operations in the United States. You’ll find Plymouth Artisan Cheese at the site of the historic Calvin Coolidge Homestead, a place that presents an authentic representation of American perseverance, simplicity, and traditional American values. Not only that, but it’s a place that offers a glimpse into the enduring spirit of Vermonters and a historical perspective on Vermont’s dairy industry.

Plymouth Artisan Cheese, started by Coolidge’s father, is still the country’s oldest cheddar, with a recipe dating back to 1890. Of course, it’s not the only nearby stop on the Vermont Cheese Trail. Here are other places we recommend!

  1. You’ll find cheese as local to us as it gets at the Billings Farm & Museum. This place is known for its dedication to land and agricultural stewardship over the years and produces a fantastic range of cheeses.
  2. Enjoy a delicious cheese tasting and farm tour at Cobb Hill Cheese, a farm well-known for its range of Gouda and other cheeses.
  3. Fat Sheep Farm has a small farm stand in its barn, where you can buy some of its delicious sheep’s milk cheeses and other local products.
  4. Though it’s a little farther away, a visit to the renowned Grafton Village Cheese Company is more than worth the hour’s drive. It’s a beautiful drive, the village is picture-perfect Vermont, and the award-winning cheddars and specialty cheeses are delicious!
