Rick will be featuring maple products in each breakfast.  And – our special Sweet Winter Suite rate of $199 will be in effect for this weekend (or check on a reduced rate for our Classic rooms).

Then take a trip to one or several local maple syrup producers to view (and in some cases help with) the process of sugaring and boiling sap.  Our neighbors at Sugarbush Farm, Top Acres Farm, and Elm Grove Farm all have special events and treats planned.  Taste so many varieties, and choose your favorite to take home (of course there will be cheese and jellies and other wonderful products to add to your bag!).

An exciting new opportunity that our family just experienced a week ago is the Moonlight Dogsled Tour pulled by the beautiful animals from the Braeburn Siberians in Windsor.  In conjunction with Great River Outfitters, you can reserve a tour on Wednesday and Friday evenings to travel under the stars and moonlight for 45 unforgettable minutes along the Connecticut River and through the Path of Life Garden.  The experience of a Vermont dogsled ride is like no other – the only sounds are the sleds running over the snow, the dogs barking in delight and whatever nature may have to share.  Or you can choose a daylight experience on Fridays and Sundays.  Owners, Kathy Bennett and Alex MacLennan share 35 purebred beauties who, believe me, LOVE to run in the snow  (Jasper was particularly excited on our run!).  And, yes, there is a comfy warm start house where you can enjoy hot beverages and delicious homemade baked treats!  But that’s just the beginning for your winter fun.  Path of Life/Great Outfitters offers sleigh rides and snowshoeing, too!  Want more -  schedule a 2- or 4- hour excursion on Wednesday or Saturday directly with the dog owners through their Braeburn site.

Sleigh rides are also available with advance reservations every day at Woodstock’s own Sugarbush Farm.  See the very trees that bring us their delicious maple syrup.  Then return to the cheese and maple syrup tasting room (hot drinks are also available).

And, of course, our Vermont bed and breakfast is only minutes from Suicide Six Ski Area and Wilderness Trails Nordic Center.  Or, drive a bit further to experience Killington, Pico and Okemo Mountains for downhill excitement.

So, what is wassail?  The term comes from Medieval England, the Norse phrase “ves heill” meaning to “drink to the health.”  The warm drink “wassail” began as an ale which is brewed with spiced apples and sugar (or other tasty combinations…).  The tradition grew from singers traveling from house-to-house during the Solstice and then became embraced by many as an early Christmas celebration.  Many versions of the festive drink will be sampled in the local restaurants, shops and homes!

Enjoy an active beginning of the day by registering for the 36th Annual John Langhans Green Mile Road Race.  This 7.1 mile challenging run/walk through beautiful Woodstock, VT begins with registration on race day at 8:00 am on the Village Green for $35 (or in advance – online at Active.com for $30.00).  Walkers start: 8:30,  runners start: 9:00am.  All participants receive a free t-shirt and snacks.  Awards, live music and dancing  are sponsored by the Spectrum Teen Center.

Or, prefer a casual, stroll in the morning?  Begin the day at Billings Farm and Museum for an Old Vermont Fourth of July.  Their celebration takes visitors back in time to 1890 (the same year Mr. Wales Johnson built the original portion of our inn!) for a reading of the Declaration of Independence, a spelling bee, and historic debates to name a few events.  Visit Billings Farm from 10AM – 5PM.

The Town of Woodstock (in conjunction with Pentangle Arts Council and The Spectrum Teen Center) is sponsoring a fun-filled Fourth of July at Woodstock Union High School.  Enjoy games, picnic food (grilled hot dogs, burgers, sausages,…), live musical entertainment and, of course, the great fireworks after dark!  Walk across from the inn to the field and mingle with our community friends, then return to The Jackson House porch for a spectacular view of the show!

Spring is returning at The Jackson House Inn

Showing support and pride for our state

The grounds at The Jackson House Inn are full of singing birds, blooming flowers and the ever-changing greens of spring.  Tropical Storm Irene did leave her mark on our area, but the mild winter and warm temperatures have given us an early carpet of green.  Roads are repaired, bridges are back (or on their way with planned projects), and support continues.  For those of you who are familiar with our nearby section of US Route 4 in Woodstock, you will find the Woodstock Farmers’ Market offering their delicious sandwiches, prepared foods and products, and we eagerly await the return of the beloved White Cottage Snack Bar (looks to be very soon).   Billings Farm & Museum is welcoming guests, and the hiking trails on Mt. Tom show even wider views of the “green” of central Vermont.  “Green-Up Day” was coordinated on Saturday, May 5, in Woodstock and around the state to give the outdoors a good spring cleaning!  As relative newcomers (only in our second year as residents in the state), we have already been amazed by the resilient, hard-working nature of everyone we meet.  Native Vermonters are, indeed, proud of their Green Mountain State heritage, and those of us who have chosen the state as home feel that sense of pride.  Another encouraging sight is the increasing number of green “Vermont Strong” license plates on local streets, in parking lots and on highways.  The state is offering license plates for Vermont registered vehicles with proceeds going to select non-profits.  The image was created by two native Vermonters, Eric Mallette and Lyz Tomsuden, whose response to the needs of Irene went viral (http://www.iamvermontstrong.com/).

Guests are enjoying the winter views from the inn’s windows (and so are we!); some are even venturing out to explore our three acres.

Look what can be found at the end of a walk in our back yard – you can sit “pond-side” in one of our Adirondack chairs!

And, of course, everyone enjoys the many local attractions – new trails open daily at Killington, Okemo, Pico and Woodstock’s own Suicide Six.  Cross country trails and snowshoeing offer a chance to explore the peace of nature in winter.
