Spring is returning at The Jackson House Inn

The grounds at The Jackson House Inn are full of singing birds, blooming flowers and the ever-changing greens of spring.  Tropical Storm Irene did leave her mark on our area, but the mild winter and warm temperatures have given us an early carpet of green.  Roads are repaired, bridges are back (or on their way with planned projects), and support continues.  For those of you who are familiar with our nearby section of US Route 4 in Woodstock, you will find the Woodstock Farmers’ Market offering their delicious sandwiches, prepared foods and products, and we eagerly await the return of the beloved White Cottage Snack Bar (looks to be very soon).   Billings Farm & Museum is welcoming guests, and the hiking trails on Mt. Tom show even wider views of the “green” of central Vermont.  “Green-Up Day” was coordinated on Saturday, May 5, in Woodstock and around the state to give the outdoors a good spring cleaning!  As relative newcomers (only in our second year as residents in the state), we have already been amazed by the resilient, hard-working nature of everyone we meet.  Native Vermonters are, indeed, proud of their Green Mountain State heritage, and those of us who have chosen the state as home feel that sense of pride.  Another encouraging sight is the increasing number of green “Vermont Strong” license plates on local streets, in parking lots and on highways.  The state is offering license plates for Vermont registered vehicles with proceeds going to select non-profits.  The image was created by two native Vermonters, Eric Mallette and Lyz Tomsuden, whose response to the needs of Irene went viral (http://www.iamvermontstrong.com/).

Guests are enjoying the winter views from the inn’s windows (and so are we!); some are even venturing out to explore our three acres.

And, of course, everyone enjoys the many local attractions – new trails open daily at Killington, Okemo, Pico and Woodstock’s own Suicide Six.  Cross country trails and snowshoeing offer a chance to explore the peace of nature in winter.

But, when you return to our bed and breakfast, know that a warm, relaxing seat by the fire is waiting!

Irene did bring some major devastation to central Vermont, but The Jackson House Inn was quite lucky with no damage sustained.  Our rooms offer relaxation and the same beautiful views.  An overflow of our brook and pond left some mud in a few back gardens and lawns which can be cleaned.  The lack of wind means that fall foliage should be as beautiful as ever, but there is also still green to enjoy now with the cool, crisp Vermont evenings.

We did have a wonderful time with our inn guests during the storm and even enjoyed a “family” dinner in the dining room.  Contributions of food, elbow grease and great conversation made for an evening we will always remember!  Thank you to John, Laura, Art, Helena, Elisabeth, Jim and Suzanne!

Woodstock’s downtown suffered some power and water outages, but work is underway for some re-openings soon.  Unfortunately some families and businesses along the larger rivers were not quite so fortunate, and our hearts go out to them.  US Route 4 is clear from Woodstock east to the New Hampshire border; repairs are underway on that same route about a mile west of our inn toward Bridgewater and Killington – we’ll have a better timetable on that and some other local roads as the week progresses.

Begin the day at Billings Farm and Museum for an Old Vermont Fourth of July.  Their celebration takes visitors back in time to 1890 (the same year Mr. Wales Johnson built the original portion of our inn!) for a reading of the Declaration of Independence, a spelling bee, and historic debates to name a few events.  VIsit Billings Farm from 10AM – 5PM.

The Town of Woodstock is sponsoring a fun-filled Fourth of July at Woodstock Union High School with games, food, entertainment and, of course, the great fireworks (4PM – 10PM)!  Walk across to the field and mingle with our community friends, then return to The Jackson House porch for a spectacular view of the show!

The colors of spring and summer have exploded here at The Jackson House Inn and all over Woodstock, Vermont.  The air is fresh and crisp, the attractions are open, and area events are filling the calendar.  Come to a peaceful, lush retreat just off Vermont’s newest Scenic Byway – Route 4, The Crossroad of Vermont.  Just a few of the many special reasons to plan a visit:

June 17-19: The sky fills with the brightest array of colors as the Quechee Hot Air Balloon and Craft Festival takes center stage in nearby Quechee, Vermont.  As the longest continually running balloon festival in New England, the event offers beauty in the sky and in the work of many craftspeople plus great food and music.  The Jackson House Inn is just a short drive from it all!

June 25: Nature’s full splendor will be on display along the History in Bloom Garden Tour in Woodstock.  Sponsored by the Woodstock Historical Society, the day includes a floral exhibit and highlights the 250th anniversary of the chartering of Woodstock.

Billings Farm Celebrates Summer

June 1 – 30:  Celebrate Dairy Month every day at Sugarbush Farm where you can sample 15 varieties of cheese; and on Sundays, visit Billings Farm & Museum for Ice Cream Sundays.  Learn the history and science behind homemade ice-cream – lend a hand and, of course, take a taste!

July 2:  Interplay Jazz students and faculty complete their week-long jazz experience with a concert at Billings Farm (2 – 4PM).  Sit, relax and enjoy!

July 4:  Celebrate our nation’s independence all day long.  An Old Vermont 4th is scheduled at Billings Farm (10AM-5PM); a village Fourth of July celebration in Woodstock fills the afternoon and evening (4-10PM).  The Jackson House Inn‘s location offers direct view of the fireworks from our porches and yard or walk to the field for entertainment, food and fun under the show!
